Crediton Public Swimming Pool, Devon
8 x 7 metre mosaic learner pool, made of vitreous tiles by Rosalind Wates Mosaics team and installed by Paul Fricker Ltd. The motifs were drawn by local primary school children, on a marine theme. One requirement in the brief was that no block of colour in the design should be able to confuse pool attendants on the alert for children in trouble. Commissioned by Mid Devon District Council. The project was featured in Channel Four’s ‘Collector’s Lot’, who made a mini documentary about how the mosaic was made.
The surrounding wall tiles feature images connected to the town of Crediton, drawn by local school children: St. Boniface, a local historical figure, beside the town church; motifs that reflect local agriculture; nearby historical landmarks such as ‘Cromwell’s Cut’; the ‘Tarka Line’ railway, and following that theme, otters and other natural wild life. The images were on-glazed onto standard tiles. Safety notices are included in the overall design in matching style.
